Each year, on the 11th of November, Americans pause to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans, a tradition that began with the first Armistice Day in 1919, which marked the end of World War I. After World War II, this occasion was renamed Veterans Day at the urging of the leaders of veteran organizations, expanding its significance to honor all who have served in our nation’s armed forces, whether it’s at home or abroad, in wartime or in peacetime. It’s a day to reflect on the freedoms we cherish and to express our deepest gratitude to those who have protected them.
This morning, many of us gathered at the Rock of Honor in Kleiner Park, joining together with local veterans, families, and friends to pay tribute to those who have selflessly served. The ceremony, thoughtfully organized by the Rock of Honor Board and local veterans’ groups, was both solemn and inspiring.
In this season of Thanksgiving, we are reminded of the importance of gratitude. Our veterans have given us countless reasons to be thankful, and today is an opportunity to show our appreciation. I encourage each of us to take a moment to thank a veteran—not just with words but with actions that honor their legacy. Whether by supporting veterans’ organizations, attending commemorative events, or simply reaching out to a veteran in our lives, let us each find ways to express our gratitude today and every day.
Our veterans embody a spirit of service to our country that many of us will never know. These men and women are our siblings, parents, children, friends, and neighbors, and their commitment to the values of courage, sacrifice, and duty enriches our lives each day. They remain a vital part of our community’s fabric even after their service, contributing as mentors, volunteers, leaders, advocates, including the more than 70 City of Meridian veteran employees. Their presence reminds us of what it means to serve selflessly, placing the greater good and the ideals of our nation above personal gain. As each of us reflect on last week’s election, let us look to their example as a beacon of patriotism and unity—one that inspires us all to work toward a brighter future for our community and country.
On behalf of a grateful City, I extend my heartfelt thanks to every veteran for their service and sacrifice. May we never forget the freedoms we enjoy, may we forever honor the bravery of those who have safeguarded them, and may God bless our veterans for their unwavering service and sacrifice.
